Sex estimation using the human vertebra: a systematic review

Abstract Background The vertebral column has been used in forensic studies for its weight-bearing function and relative density. Sex estimation is one of the essential elements an anthropological examination, as it may narrow down possibility a match by half. Hence, crucial to derive population-specific reference data each vertebra sex estimation. This systematic review explored most sexually dimorphic using conventional anthropometric analysis. Main body An electronic comprehensive search was conducted databases such Scopus, Web Science (WOS) EBSCO Medline relevant between 2008 2020. main inclusion criteria were English, on morphometric analysis CT scan or dry bone. Only related human adult age analysed. Literature identified 84 potentially articles, which 19 articles had fulfilled criteria. included cervical, thoracic lumbar vertebrae different populations. Conclusion spine demonstrated significant sexual dimorphism with variable prediction accuracies, whereby found be dimorphic. It shown that high accuracy classification provided second twelfth first vertebrae, especially when they combination.
